10-31-1985 Norman OK USA

Venue: Subterranea

This show was the first time that Scott Booker ever saw The Flaming Lips. He and his friends had attended a Sting solo concert at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman at the University of Oklahoma earlier in the evening. The Lips had put fliers on the cars parked for the Sting advertising their own Halloween concert later that evening, and Booker convinced his friends to go to the Lips show. His friends immediately left, asking for a refund, but Booker stayed for the show and loved it.

Scott's quote from Staring At Sound:

"There were maybe ten or twelve people there, not counting my friends, but right when we walked in, the Lips were doing their version of Sting's 'If You Love Somebody Set Them Free,' which was just pure, unadulterated noise. I was mesmerized. I thought, 'Oh my God, this is the coolest thing I have ever seen in my life.'"

Scott's quote from Oklahoma Today:

"I loved it. From that show forward, there wasn’t a Lips show within a hundred-mile radius I haven’t seen, probably to this date."
