The Spark That Bled

(The Softest Bullet Ever Shot)

Wayne's quote from Staring At Sound:

"'The Spark' is like three or four different songs jammed together, and you get these great sweeps of mood where one part shifts into the other. Little by little we started thinking, 'We can do that, and instead of it being awkward or noisy or patched together with feedback, whatever solutions we used before, we can rely on the emotions we're putting across in the music and the singing."

The cover of The Soft Bulletin is inspired by "The Spark That Bled."

I accidentally touched my head
And noticed that I had been bleeding
For how long I didn't know

What was this, I thought, that struck me
What kind of weapons have they got
The softest bullet ever shot

I stood up and I said, "Yeah!"
I stood up and I said, "Yeah!"
I stood up and I said, "Hey! Yeah, yeah, yeah!"

From this moment on
Blaring like a trumpet
Coming from above us
And somewhere below
The confidence of knowing
Descending to relieve us
Of the struggle to believe it's so

I stood up and I said, "Yeah!"
I spoke up and I said, "Hey!"
I stood up and I said, "Hey! Yeah, yeah, yeah!"

And it seemed to cause a chain reaction
It had momentum, it was gaining traction
It was all the rage, it was all the fashion
The outreached hands had resigned themselves
To holding onto something that they never had
And that's too bad
'Cause in reality there was no reaction

I accidentally touched my head
And noticed that I had been bleeding
For how long I didn't know

Live

Wayne would pour fake blood on his forehead and let it drip down his face while singing "The Spark That Bled," theatrically mirroring the lyrics. He has said that he was inspired to use the fake blood by famous photos of Miles Davis bleeding from the head onto his white suit after being hit by a police officer outside a club where he was performing in 1959.
